Mokes & removable grilles
« on: August 06, 2011, 06:56:55 PM »
Good evening all,

A quick question for those in the know....

Removable Moke grilles....  what year did they start?

I have a 76 and it's still part of the entire panel, however as the grille needs some serious work I was considering buying a grille and retro fitting it with a bit of angle grinding and chopping... so that it is removable, as I'm thinking this will be an advantage later when I want access to the engine bay? Is this possible to fit a removable grille to a panel that had the grille 'pressed' in?

Cheers.

Hi,
Yes it can be done, just remmember you need to make and ad some brackets to hold the new grille in.
so if you are still working on the car you can weld in some brackets, and if the car is finished, then you will have to find a nother way of fixing in the new brackets..bolt them in, or pop rivet them in.
check out my build in the garage, as I am just working on my moke with the same problem

Hi,

The year they were introduced is 1976, but they tend to be found later int he year around October'ish.

Mav has pretty much covered the basics and it was not an uncommon mod to carefully cut the grille out long before the Factory started doing it.
